Pipette Tip Selection Guide

Pipette is an indispensable experimental instrument in biological research, and its accessory tip is also used in a large number of experiments. Today, let's see how to choose a pipette tip.

Classification of pipette tips

Tips, as consumables used with pipettes, are generally classified into standard tips, filter tips, low-adsorption tips, and heat-free tips according to different applications.

  • Standard tip is the most widely used tip. Almost all pipetting operations can use ordinary tip, which is the most economical type of tip.

  • The filter tip is a consumable designed to avoid cross-contamination. It is often used in experiments such as molecular biology, cytology, and virology.

  • For experiments with high sensitivity requirements, or precious samples or reagents that are easy to remain, you can choose a low-adsorption tip to increase the recovery rate. The surface of the low-adsorption tip has undergone a hydrophobic treatment, which can reduce the low surface tension liquid leaving more residues in the tip.

How to choose pipette tips?

 🔹Material

At present, the suction tips on the market are basically made of polypropylene plastic (colorless and transparent plastic with high chemical inertness and wide temperature range). However, the quality of the same polypropylene will vary greatly: high-quality tips are generally made of natural polypropylene, while cheap tips are likely to use recycled polypropylene plastic (in this case, we can only said its main component is polypropylene).

In addition, most of the tips will add a small amount of additives during the manufacturing process, the common ones are: 1. Color-developing materials. Commonly known in the market as blue tip (1000ul) and yellow tip (200ul), the corresponding color-developing material is added to polypropylene; 2, release agent. Help the tip to be separated from the mold quickly after forming. Of course, the more additives, the higher the probability of undesirable chemical reactions during pipetting. So it is best not to add additives! However, due to the relatively high requirements for the production process, nozzles without additives are rare in the market.

🔹Packaging

The packaging forms of the tip are mainly bagged and boxed. In relatively mature markets, boxed products are the majority; in China, bagged products are currently the absolute mainstream-- mainly bagged products are cheaper. The so-called bagging is to pack the tips in plastic ziplock bags, 500 or 1000 per bag. Most users will manually put the tip into the tip box after buying the bagged tip. Although the labor force in China is relatively cheap, this also increases the chance of polluting the suction head! In addition, a new form of packaging has emerged in recent years, that is, refill (8-plate or 10-plate suction heads are stacked into a tower, which can be quickly put into the suction head box without touching the suction head). This kind of suction head requires less storage space and greatly reduces the use of plastic, thereby achieving the goal of environmental protection. Although the domestic share of this form is still negligible, it must be the general trend in the long run.
